The BBC Sports Personality of the Year has been awarded to 15 times champion jockey A P McCoy who won the hearts of the voters through his astonishing against-the-odds achievements. McCoy has broken virtually every horse racing record and broken almost every bone in his body – but it was only in April 2010 year that he finally won the coveted Grand National at his fifteenth attempt. Runner-up was veteran darts champion Phil Taylor and third place went to heptathlete Jessica Ennis.

It seems astonishing now that seven months ago we all thought this year’s Sports Personality of the Year would be a no-brainer, at least in terms of which sport would dominate. Surely the only question was to be whether it would be Rooney, Lampard or Gerard, depending on who scored the winning goal in the World Cup Final. Dream on, England footie fans; maybe the English players will take heart from Cesc Fabregas’ comments at the awards ceremony about “togetherness and friendship” being the key to the Spanish Team’s World Cup glory.
