If Jose Reyes' self-serving early departure from the Mets' 162nd and final game of the 2011 season is any indication as to how his soon-to-be contract negotiations will be with the organization, the Mets better be ready to do battle - and be willing to shell out an outrageous sum in order to re-sign him.
Reyes Beats Out Braun For NL Batting Crown
With his leadoff bunt single in the bottom of the first inning, Reyes comfortably placed himself, statistically speaking, ahead of his nearest competitor, Ryan Braun of the Brewers, for the National League batting (average) title. For Braun to overtake Reyes for the 2011 crown, he would have to collect at least three hits in the Brewers regular season finale against the Pirates. Unfortunately for Braun, he went 0 for 4, and the case is now closed. Sort of.
When Reyes took himself out of the game, the game was, again, in only the first inning. The game was a scoreless tie. Reyes, with his remarkable speed, is always a threat to steal a base and put himself into scoring position. However, he chose to leave the game after facing what amounted to only two total pitches. For the record, the Mets could not cash in on Reyes' leadoff single; they eventually crossed the plate for the first time in the fourth inning, long after Reyes had secured a spot on the bench.
