I Get Around – The Beach Boys
Cars were one of the big topics in early Brian Wilson compositions for The Beach Boys, right up there with girls and surfing. Brian’s actual knowledge of all three subjects was limited, but the pure pop joy and wide-eyed innocence of songs like “I Get Around” has rarely been equalled, though the title gains an ironic twist when one discovers that Brian Wilson spent much of the late sixties and early seventies as a recluse, and really didn’t get around much at all.
You Can't Catch Me – Chuck Berry
Cars were big in 50s Rock n’ Roll, and Chuck Berry wrote several classic car-related rockers, perhaps the best of all being this ode to speeding on the New Jersey Turnpike, trying to outflank a “flat-top” who “comes rollin’ up”, then fleeing from the state-patrol. The frantic beat of the song really captures the adrenaline rush that one probably gets when speeding from the police.
Also notable because The Beatles’ track “Come Together” opens with a slightly reworded couplet from “You Can’t Catch Me”, by way of tribute to one of their great influences, but Big Seven Music Corp., who owned Berry’s copyright, promptly sued for plagiarism.
