The Fantastic Lies of Grizzly Rose, the third full length album from singer-songwriter Miwa Gemini strings together elements of western swing, acoustic pop, gypsy-infused folk, and gritty motorcycle rock. Miwa who is best known for finding the pixie in a room full of trolls knows her strengths for glistening spirituals and carnival rompers. For Fantastic Lies, Miwa augments her melodies with toy-like chimes, percolating shakers, accordion swirls, the serpentine puffs of the trumpet, and the rustling tremors from the xylophone. The result is a manifestation of chamber pop stylized for contemporary mindsets.

Tracks to Check Out

The carousal-spun minstrel of “Goodnight Trail” is reflective of mid-western pastorals, and the grinding guitar shreds of “Pioneertown Love Story” amble with a rugged traction akin to the Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. The brisk shakers enhance the gritty texture of the tune giving it a rough hue reminiscent of the music in James Dean’s films, contrasting the gently winged psychedelics of “Alice’s Voice” suspended by lacy clarinet swirls cuffed in minor chords. The roving trills of the xylophone is partnered with the heavy tones of the trombone whose resonating puffs are stretched out into a slow moving swagger along “Paused” as Miwa purports, “When I put on my boots / I know where we are heading.”

Other tracks have a sparse instrumentation like the tapping drum strikes of “Matchbox House Blues” as the lyrics proposition, “Let’s build a house in a matchbox / We’ll call it out home / Let’s weave a tree out of silver yarn / We’ll call it our cocoon… we’ll dream in our cocoon.” One of Miwa’s finest tracks is her rendition of “Que Sera Sera”. She brings out the visceral innocence of the words and the light gait of the melody to cherubic perfection.
